You find someone with a massive following, the aesthetic feels right for your feed, and your product looks great in their hands. Then the campaign goes live and the results are completely flat. Most brands find a creator they love and work backward to invent an objective. That’s the wrong sequence. The goal must determine everything: the influencer tier, the platform format, and the level of community specificity.
A brand awareness play and a pure conversion campaign require two fundamentally different creator profiles. Before you open a single app, run your objective through a clarity check: What specific action do you want this audience to take? If the answer is vague, your performance will be too.

An engagement percentage tells you if an audience is paying attention, but you need to read the actual text of the comments to understand if they care. If engagement drops off a cliff the second a paid hashtag appears, it means the audience has learned to tune out that creator's promotions. Fake followers and engagement pods remain an expensive problem for brands. Inflated metrics distort campaign data, waste your budget, and erode the credibility of your activation before it even launches.
Use analytics tools to audit follower authenticity. Look for steady, organic growth charts rather than sudden, unexplained spikes. If the numbers feel artificial, trust your gut. Rationalizing past a red flag just because a creator's creative looks pretty is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make.
One-off placements generate short-term spikes; sustained partnerships build the kind of compound social proof that drives real brand momentum. When you find a creator whose community is yours and whose register is right, invest in that relationship for the long haul.
